Brokeback MountainI finally made it to the theater to watch Brokeback Mountain this weekend. It was one of those movies you think about for days afterward.
The story focuses on Ennis and Jack, two cowboys who meet in 1963, and start working together on Brokeback Mountain. After a while, their friendship turns into something more. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an entry about a review I'd read that described their relationship as having 'exploded' into the physical. At the time, I thought it an unfortunate choice of words, but after seeing the movie, I think it's a very accurate description.
That first love scene is very startling, even shocking, because there isn't any buildup to it, no loving words, no loving caresses, nothing. One minute they're laying in the tent, and the next minute everyone's pants are down and the deed is done. It was violent, visceral, and emotionally graphic. The impression I got was that they were each raping the other - emotionally, because they were both so unwilling to be 'queer'. It was eye-opening, for sure.
The love they had for each other was endless, but I think more so on the side of Ennis. He and Jack both got married, and had children, but continued to get together for fishing trips (that, ironically, never yielded any fish).
Ennis was very conflicted about their relationship, because he knew that society wouldn't accept what was going on, if anyone ever found out. Jack was more open, and wanted to leave all the 'front' behind, and go live together, grow old together.
In all the reviews I've read, not one of them mentioned the shock at the end. I won't tell you what happened, but it surprised me. It also made me very sad, because although the era represented was years and years ago, I can see the same thing happening here, where I live, because people are too rigid and unaccepting.
It was an incredible movie - one everyone should see, if only to teach people a little about love and acceptance. Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryBraeden and I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night. I was a huge fan of the first one, so I was a little hesitant about this one. It was INCREDIBLE. There is no other way to describe it. Before Pirates of the Caribbean, I was never a big fan of Johnny Depp. He won me over with that movie, and with this one, he solidified his new standing. He is breath-taking as Willy Wonka - just a little kooky. The same little boy that played Peter in Neverland opposite Johnny Depp plays Charlie, and this kid is a little weird, but he comes across as a genuine Charlie.
The colors in this movie were incredible, all brilliant and vibrant. And the scenery - AWESOME!
The story also went a little more in depth regarding Willy Wonka and his childhood, and I loved the emphasis that was put on family.
The only drawback - it might be a little scary in parts for very young children. Braeden was scared a couple of times, especially when the boy falls in the chocolate river, and the girl turns into a giant blueberry.
Great, great movie.
