Lighter Fare

Maybe I'll go a little less political today.    My little brother, B, and I played tennis last night, and he kicked my ass, the little bastard.

Braeden, my 4-year-old, and I were on our way home last night, and out of nowhere he asks me 'Mommy, how did God make us?'  So there I sat in traffic trying to get my flabbergasted mind to come up with an answer to a question that millions of intelligent people have been trying to conclusively decide for thousands of years.   I finally told him the truth, that I don't know, but maybe we would find out someday if we're lucky.

That question got me thinking.  Our cat recently died, and my uncle is dying of a brain tumor, so Braeden is having to deal with death, and, by association, the concept of life.  Naturally, he's going to have questions, and children understand a lot more than some people think.  When I was pregnant with Braeden, I certainly never thought about what I was going to teach him regarding the creation of life.  I believe in 'God', i.e., a supreme being of some sort.  But I am not a religious person.  Spiritual, but not religious.  I don't go to church because I'm not a fan of the judgmental hypocrisy that seems to breed in organized religion.  But I do see the beauty of our world and know that it can't possibly have been an accident.  If you've ever stood at the top of a mountain at sunrise and watched the sun light the clouds on fire and the songs of the birds were so hauntingly beautiful that they took your breath away, then you have seen the work of someone.  Or if you've ever struggled to give birth and then had a doctor hand you a tiny, tiny person, perfectly created, with just the right amount of fingers and toes, and those perfect little eyelashes.  How could that be an accident of nature?

So, I just take every day as it comes, hoping to instill in Braeden a love of nature, of people, of LIFE, really.  I want him to look around and be amazed, every day of his life.  Because there are so many amazing things around us, and we are so busy that we just walk on by.  What a shame.

Three quotes for today, they go right along with this topic.
"There are two ways to live your life.  One is as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as if everything is." -Albert Einstein
"Seek the wisdom of the ages, but look at the world through the eyes of a child."
"The world will never starve for want of wonders, but only for the want of wonder."

Well, I promised a lighter subject today, and then I switch to religion.  Sorry.  I guess you guys bring out the philosopher in me.    Be very, very afraid.

Thank you for the kind comments on my site. You have a great blog here too. I am spiritual as well. I do not belong to any denomination. You should read my postings on Indian Residential schools to find out why I am not into organized religion. Scary. I am going to tackle the religion thing very soon in my blog. Keep reading and keep fighting the power..........AL

Interesting blog, Courtney.... I enjoyed the read very much. I am also spiritual (very much so, in fact) but not a member of a church. "Organized Religion" just got to be more of a headache than it was worth.

Kids come up with some great questions, don't they?

I think you definately have it right here...all of this is no accident. And with any broad generalization there will always be notable exceptions: Not all hypocrites go to church and not every church goer is a hypocrite. I've been on both sides of the 'aisle' and can tell you that there are some real good folks inside as well as out.

You are very thoughtful and I appreciate you writing your musing for us to ponder with you.

Hello Courtney!

thanks for adding me to your list!! Yeah you should visit Chicago! I just love it. In fact my friends tell me that I will fall in love with New York if I liked Chicago so much. It is just that buzz in the air that big cities have (must be all the electrical waves or whatever but who cares :D).
